DSHEA is under attack

CNN (and others) report on the release of the US Institute of Medicine’s 327-page  CAM report which makes recommendations for dramatic changes in the complementary and alternative medicine sector, and the way it is overseen by the FDA.

The IOM report suggests that one of the biggest problems with DSHEA is that it “mistakenly” classified dietary supplements as foods.

The Institute urges that “complimentary and alternative medical procedures, such as herbal remedies and acupuncture, be required to meet the same standards of effectiveness as conventional medical treatments.”

This means a drugs regime, or something very similar, is being proposed for complementary health products and services, including dietary supplements.

Dr. Stuart Bondurant, chairman of the committee, said that “reliable and standardized products are needed.”
