Calls for a ban on junk food in schools are intended to protect children’s future health, according to the chair of the School Food Trust.

The trust, which was set up following the success of Jamie Oliver’s TV programmes on school meals, is launching a new campaign today to try and ensure all schools not only stop selling fizzy drinks and sweets, but also offer children attractive alternatives.

Dame Suzi Leather told BBC One’s lunchtime news: ‘Obesity takes nine years off your live. This is about protecting our kids’ health for the future.

‘One in eight kids is obese and if we don’t take action it’s going to be one in four by 2020. We mustn’t let this happen,’ she finished.
