Volunteers needed for sweetener study

The Food Standards Agency has issued an appeal for volunteers to take part in a new pilot study looking at aspartame. The research is focusing on people who have reported bad reactions to the artificial sweetener, including headaches and upset stomachs.

‘We are urging those who have reported these symptoms to take part in our study.’

The study was launched in June and researchers are asking people who have experienced these symptoms to consider taking part in the study.

Looking at the FSA’s latest request for study volunteers who have experienced adverse reactions in the past to aspartame, one wonders if the FSA wants to have reason to underplay the problem. If you get blinding headaches after consuming a can’s worth of soft drink with aspartame, would you want to be part of a study to see just how bad the reaction was — for 18 months?! Our Executive Director, Robert Verkerk, is one such person, and having asked him about it, he’s not sure his busy schedule could afford him the time to be laid out by aspartame, even if it was to prove just how nasty the sweetener is!
