NHS – The jewel in whose crown?

This week’s focus in our eAlert is on the fourth largest employer in the world – the UK’s National Health Service or NHS. It’s often referred to as the jewel in the UK’s welfare crown. But whose welfare and whose crown? And for how much longer given its inability to keep up with the pressure from chronic and even infectious diseases.

Amidst the NHS’ cost cutting drive, the Healthcare behemoth is planning to rid itself of a bunch of treatments it thinks have inadequate evidence base. In there, understandably given the ferocity of the sustained attack from the mainstream, is homeopathy. But there are some much more unexpected casualties – that have come about through a mix of scientific manipulation and outright discrimination. In fact, what’s more, the NHS has to contravene it’s own constitution to pull this off. But – UK residents and citizens can do something and must act now via their MPs. The timing is crucial. Our other piece relates to October’s annual Breast Awareness Month. It’s an international affair, WHO sanctioned, and all that. But hold on – it pushes more women into mammography screening when the science tells us this kind of screening does more harm than good – and costs the taxpayer dearly for the ‘privilege’. This is a nonsense – and it’s clear that money – not a genuine interest in public health is the driver.
